Now everyone is talking about the new heir to the Royal
Throne but here at A Norton Septic Contracting we are always talking about
Royal Thrones-Your toilet & your septic system. Most people do not realize the importance of a good working toilet & what occurs behind the scene.
So let’s take some time to focus on your royal throne. What is a toilet?
It is a plumbing fixture used for urination & defecation. Most modern toilets consist
of a porcelain or ceramic bowl fitted with a hinge seat. This is connected to a
waste water pipe at the underneath of the toilet that flushes waste & water
into a sewer or septic system.
In 1596 the first flushing toilet was invented for Queen
Elizabeth I by her godson, Sir John Harrington.
During the 1800’s people realized that poor sanitary
conditions caused diseases, so having toilets & a sewer system that
could control human waste became a priority for medical experts, lawmakers and
the general public. Hence our sewer system or septic system was designed. We
have come a long way from the ancient Romans that had a system of sewers that carried
their waste water from the latrines & outhouses and disposed of the waste
directly into these sewers that emptied into the Tiber River.
So what does all this mean for us today?
Well for those that have their own sewer systems-Individual Subsurface Sewage
Disposal System-aka Septic System, you need to be careful what your “royal
throne” toilet is used for.
Do not use your toilet as a trash can by dumping non-degradable items down your toilets or drains.
Also do not poison your septic system and groundwater by
pouring harmful chemicals or cleaning agents down the drains. They can kill the beneficial bacteria that treat your wastewater.
Keep the following items out of your toilets and septic systems:
- Grease, disposable diapers, plastics, cigarettes, feminine products, kitty litter, baby wipes, cotton balls/swabs, lint & hair, dental floss, coffee grinds, paint are some examples that should not be in or flushed down your toilet. Also keep discarded prescription medicine & antifreeze out of your toilet as well. For a list of our Septic 101 for care & usage of Septic Systems just contact us today.
Lack of preventative maintenance can cause costly repair and/or replacement which can result in down time or non-usage of your inside plumbing (toilets, showers etc) so keep your
royal throne happy and working well. It will take care of you when you need it.
Remember not all of us our fortunate to have a toilet. There
are over 2.5 billion people around the world that do not have proper sanitation,
that 1.1 billion people must defecate in the open without any use of a toilet. Providing toilets could save the lives of more than 200,000 children each year. See the link below for World Toilet Day.
So treasure your toilet and be thankful you are not part of the billions of people without a one.
Keep your septic system happy & healthy. In the long run it will keep your home,
property and environment healthy & working well for many years to come.
